Stack Gives Back In fact having a page file that is too large with a large amount of physical RAM can actually slow down your system as Windows will keep using the pagefile instead of physical memory. If you are able to, experiment with pagefile sizes and see what gives you the best performance:stability ratio.
So a good rule of thumb for a server with plenty of RAM would be a pagefile of around 2GB, just in case. I would say just have it as large as you can afford the disk space for. I've never heard of systems with a large page file slowing down as someone else mentioned earlier and would be keen to see some evidence to support the statement that Windows would use the page file instead of RAM I really don't think that is the case. As others have mentioned, you should have at least a couple of GB so that you get a memory dump in the event of a blue screen - if you have over 3 GB of RAM, Windows will automatically select to just do a kernel memory dump rather than a full memory dump, and the kernel can only ever use 2 GB of RAM maximum, so I would say a minimum would be 2.

Hi, I don't believe a huge page file hurts performance, though you're obviously depriving yourself of 85ish GB of space that could be used for other things. Thanks for the input. Two more questions though Thanks again. Friday, April 26, AM. I think it's because you've create a discussion thread rather than a question.
